Background of the Study

Childhood malnutrition is a significant public health concern, particularly in developing countries, where it contributes to high rates of morbidity and mortality among children under five years old (WHO, 2023). Malnutrition, which includes both undernutrition and overnutrition, can lead to stunted growth, cognitive impairment, and increased susceptibility to infections. The causes of malnutrition are multifactorial and include poor dietary practices, lack of access to nutritious food, infections, and poverty (Adeniyi et al., 2024).

Nurses play a crucial role in the prevention, identification, and management of childhood malnutrition. Their responsibilities include educating parents and caregivers on proper nutrition, identifying early signs of malnutrition, and providing medical interventions, such as nutritional support and therapeutic feeding. Nurses also coordinate with other healthcare providers, including pediatricians and dietitians, to ensure that children receive comprehensive care. However, studies suggest that nurses in many healthcare settings lack adequate knowledge and training in managing childhood malnutrition, which can hinder the effectiveness of interventions (Musa et al., 2023).

Bauchi State General Hospital is a key healthcare facility in Bauchi State, Nigeria, serving a large population with diverse healthcare needs, including pediatric care. While the hospital provides essential services for children, the extent of nurses' knowledge and management practices related to childhood malnutrition has not been sufficiently explored. This study aims to assess the knowledge and management practices of nurses at Bauchi State General Hospital concerning childhood malnutrition and to identify potential areas for improvement in care delivery.

Statement of the Problem

Childhood malnutrition remains a critical health challenge in Nigeria, and the role of nurses in managing this condition is crucial to improving health outcomes for children. However, nurses at Bauchi State General Hospital may lack the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively manage childhood malnutrition, which could contribute to poor outcomes for affected children. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and management practices of nurses regarding childhood malnutrition at Bauchi State General Hospital, identifying gaps in care and suggesting strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Bauchi State General Hospital regarding childhood malnutrition.
  2. To evaluate the management practices of nurses in handling cases of childhood malnutrition at Bauchi State General Hospital.
  3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in managing childhood malnutrition and propose recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses at Bauchi State General Hospital regarding childhood malnutrition?
  2. How do nurses manage cases of childhood malnutrition at Bauchi State General Hospital?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing childhood malnutrition at Bauchi State General Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between the level of knowledge of nurses and the effectiveness of their management practices for childhood malnutrition.
  2. Nurses with higher knowledge of childhood malnutrition are more likely to use appropriate management practices.
  3. The challenges faced by nurses in managing childhood malnutrition are significantly related to a lack of resources and inadequate training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the pediatric and general wards of Bauchi State General Hospital who are involved in the care of children with malnutrition. The study will not include nurses from other healthcare settings or regions, limiting the generalizability of the findings.

A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias. Additionally, the study will focus solely on childhood malnutrition and will not address other aspects of pediatric health.

Definitions of Terms
